The FUE Hair Transplant Methods
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), also known as follicular transfer (FT), is one of the main methods of obtaining follicular units for hair transplantation. FUE is widely used globally, offering patients various advantages compared to the Strip Method (FUT), depending on their goals and expectations.
FUE is commonly chosen as an alternative to FUT when the scalp is too tight for a strip excision. It also allows the surgeon to harvest finer hair from the nape of the neck, which is often used for the frontal hairline or facial hair transplant, such as eyebrows.
While FUE may provide excellent results for many patients, this isn’t always the case. The follicles are harvested from a larger donor area compared to FUT, which can result in visible scars and sparser hair coverage in the donor area over time. Additionally, the maximum graft yield and hair retention rate are generally lower than with FUT. FUE procedures also take longer and can be more expensive.
After the transplant procedure, one advantage of FUE is a faster recovery time and reduced post-operative discomfort compared to FUT.
